Captain's Day report

Saturday was Mike Murray’s second Captains Day! A more informal event than last year's but just as enjoyable and attended by 48 members. The format was a 4ball Texas Scramble with a 10% handicap allowance.

The pro shop were also invited to make a team and captained by the captain Mike, Luke, Ryan and I ventured out in the first group.

I’m not sure what scores were to be expected but our team had aspirations of shooting in the 50’s.

After putting a target on our heads of a £10 shop voucher per person per team that could beat us we knew we needed a good score.

After a very slow start with two pars and some sloppy approach play at the third we thankfully rolled in a birdie from 15ft and then eagled the 4th to get our round going.

Birdies from 6 through to 9 meant we turned in -7. Further birdies at 10, 13,14,15,16 meant we needed a birdie to get to 13 under and a score starting with a ‘5’.

Then Ryan popped up with shot of the day at 17. From the back tees Ry hit a 5 that went straight to the back left flag, bounced a foot short before hitting the flag full on before hopping back. We made the putt and our 50 something was alive.

A further birdie at 18 completed our round in 58 shots. 5 pars, 12 birdies and an eagle plus our 1 shot meant we completed in 51points.

We sat back to wait for the scores to follow.

What scores came in were amazing. The last place score was 45points and the winning team of lady captain Chris Stamp, John West, Allan Danaher and Mike Lake. tied our target score of 51points. Which meant all the teams were within 6 points of each other. An incredible scoring day. The BBQ followed the golf before Mike finished off with a presentation.

A great day was had and everyone enjoyed the format. Congratulations for another great captaincy and I’ll look forward to representing Stevenage Golf with Mike in the PGA Captain/Pro Pro-am next month at Old Fold Manor.

Coaching news

Be a player...

As mentioned in last week's edition I have scheduled a new nine hole group playing lesson. Working on technique is always important, however, once you are on the course it is often your mental state that needs attention.

This is aimed at both the golf club player and advanced players and presents a series of 'human skills'. Played over nine holes, we will experiment and explore these human skills through a series of explorations on the golf course that strip away the many swing thoughts going on at any one time.

Aimed at uniting your technical skills and on course performance to unlock your golfing potential and breakdown milestones! We will be teeing off on Wednesday 14th August at 2pm, but one of the 3 places has been booked so two more remain costing £20 per person.

Studio news

Play and practice indoors...

From September we will be hiring out the teaching studio, to allow you to play or practice for £25 per hour.

You will be able to book online and up to 4 people will be able to use studio at any one time and you can even play US Open venues such as this year's Pebble Beach.

We will provide you more information in future newsletters, so stay-tuned.

The simple shoe equation

Mathematics can be a complicated subject with all that pi, algebra and calculus floating around, but there is one simple equation we can all understand:
