If 'Carlsberg did Mondays'...
This week I had the pleasure of playing with Stevenage Golf Club Member, Steve Howarth in the PGA StaySure Regional Pro-am qualifier at Saffron Walton Golf Club. Steve qualified to play in this event with me through a club competition and, only having played with Steve once before, I was looking forward to the day. 22 pairs were in the field with only 2 spots up for grabs to progress to the national final being held at The London Club. If ‘Carlsberg did Mondays’ this was certainly it. The sun was shining, the temperature was perfect and we had very little breeze. We met just after 9:30 for our 11:30 tee time and started with some bacon rolls and coffee before heading to the range to warm up and then putting green all ready to for our tee time. We had one of those days where we couldn’t get anything going. We did nothing wrong in terms of our play, but didn’t hole any real momentum building putts. One bogey and one birdie on front nine left us level par and from experience knowing we needed to be around 7under to have a chance, our back nine was going to need to be immense. One of the important things in these events is to dovetail well and when we both birdied the 10th the chase was on or did we just waste a birdie because only one of our scores counted; it turned out to be the latter. We picked up one further birdie on the 14th and our 38pts was not going to be enough. We finished in a tie for 9th and 6 shots behind the two qualifying pairs who both shot 44pts. A nice bit of dinner followed with a couple of beverages but it was not to be this year. Thanks Steve for a great day hopefully we can have better luck next year!
