The golden rule in matchplay...
The day after I was in Senior Captain and Pro action. My first outing with Roy against Roger Gamage and Jeremy Bishop. We had a great match and the opposition dove-tailed really well making it difficult for us to get a head. At the turn it was A/S before they decided to throw some heavy punches! Leaving us 2 down with 3 to play! On 16 I’ll admit we got lucky with Roy the only man from the 4 of us to complete the hole meaning we were 1 down standing on 17! There is a bit of a saying in matchplay: expect your opponent to hole everything and on 17 I got a stark reminder! My partner and Jeremy both out of the hole after some poor tee shots. Roger, who is getting 2 shots hits his first shot OOB, 3 off the tee hits driver and with a few deflections ends up short of the pond. He then pitches to the back of the green 20+ feet away. I chip my 2nd shot on to the green 6 feet away and with Roger having a nasty downhill putt, I’m honestly thinking I have a putt to win the hole!
Well Roger then smashes his putt straight in the hole for an amazing 5 nett 3! Leaving my putt now to not lose the match! Fortunately for us I holed it to continue the match where we were now 1 down with 1 to play! A par was good enough to win us the hole and halve the match!
A close call in our first match but I can say we are still undefeated this year and we hope that to continue!
