This week I fitted James for some new irons in our teaching studio using our Foresight Sports GC2 and HMT. There aren’t many times that I can’t, or haven’t, improved someone’s performance by introducing new technology or changing the makeup of the current club. Sometimes when there might not be much gain it’s important to be honest and say for the extra investment is it worth it? Then sometimes the proof is in the evidence. James had Mizuno JPX850 which aren’t that old, maybe 3 or 4 years. Part of the reason for the fitting was that during James’s lessons we were consistently seeing the lie angle toe down by up to 8degrees and we were seeing lots of toe strikes. My aim from the fitting was to get a spec that delivered the lie angle much flatter at impact. After a warm up we got into the fitting and James’s own 7iron. I won’t bore you with too many numbers but the main points were: Average ball speed - 99.1mph Average lie angle - 7.6degrees toe down Carry distance - 126 yards After a few tweaks and different shafts, we saw with each change a marked improvement. This was the final result again with 7 iron: Average ball speed - 108.9mph Average lie angle - 0.4degrees down Average carry distance - 156 yards A whopping 30 yeards through the air improvement! Not only that, his shots were also straighter by a mile! There was nothing left to say, apart from wow. Check out the results below. If you would like a fitting get in touch to see if improvements can be made.
