Greetings golfers,

Has it stopped it raining yet? What a week of weather. Wednesday was an absolute shocker and we saw a month’s rainfall in 24 hours. However the course had stood up to the challenge, a bit damp in places, mainly around the stream, but is ready for play.

This Saturday we have Tom Gallagher’s Captain's Day and everyone is looking forward to a great day and with the weather forecast looking better, we hope everyone taking part has a great day. Look out for the report in next week’s newsletter.

Captain/Pro Pro Am

Next week Captain Tom and myself are in action in the regional qualifier for the national Captain/Pro Pro Am at East Herts, which is a better ball competition, and the winning pair on Tuesday get to the national final in Morrocco.

Similar to Captain's Day the report will feature in next week’s edition.

Junior news

Junior Coaching

Ryan will be holding junior group classes every Saturday at 10am or 11am throughout the summer holidays. There is no commitment, just make the ones you can. Each class is only £6 per junior. Please note that there is no class Saturday 12th August.

Podcast of the week

This week it is ‘On the Mark’ with Pete Cowan. I listen to podcasts as I love to hear what great coaches do. I especially like listening to them when they talk about things that they coach, only to realise I do the same or very similar. In this case Pete talks about a very centred swing, which is one thing I love to see in a golf swing.
Pete coaches Lee Westwood, Henrik Stenson and Matt Fitzpatrick to name a few so I recommend a listen.

Don't put yourself at a disadvantage

We always encourage the golfers we teach to get out on the practice ground between lessons. It’s through this repetition that swing changes start to feel more natural so the pupil can then hit the course full of confidence. We love good habits like this, but there is one habit we see all the time that we certainly don’t recommend…

NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE?

It’s not uncommon for us to see members playing a scuffed ball, using it until it eventually gets lost. But ball damage, such as worn dimples or surface cuts, can alter the airflow over your ball, making your trajectory more erratic and causing wayward shots and shorter carries.

You might think this would have minimal effect versus and unblemished ball, but a mark across just a few dimples can make 10 yards difference to a shot, as we’ve demonstrated in the illustration here.

IT'S AN EASY CHOICE

You have the ability to ensure your ball is the same on every hole, which is why we recommend finding one you like and sticking to it to improve your consistency.

One to definitely try is the Callaway Supersoft, which has surface contours on its dimples that reduce drag and enhance lift to increase carry time for longer shots.

Which one are you?

So you find yourself on the course facing 172 yards left to the pin; how do you work out which club to use? There is one method that many turn to, but we hope you’re not one of them...

PLUS OR MINUS 10 YARDS

Do you know how far you hit each iron, or do you just add or subtract 10 yards per club from your 150 club to find the one you need?

We come across many amateurs who do this, but you’d be surprised how far out this method is when we bring those golfers in for a gapping session, which helps explain why they miss so many greens.
